With this, it allowed the teams of researchers Jair Mari, Rodrigo Bressan and Ary Gadelha (Unifesp) to work with the Genetic Neurobiology Lab, JHU. Among the actions developed: presentations by researcher Russell L. Margolis (JHU) at the Schizophrenia Program Symposium 2017 of the Schizophrenia Program (PROESQ) and in the grand rounds of the Department of Psychiatry of Unifesp, in 2019; Bressan and Gadelha’s visit to JHU in 2019; one-month experience by residents Felipe Arcadepani and Bianca Camerini (Unifesp) at JHU; bressan and Gadelha presentation at the Psychiatric Research Seminar in 2021 at JHU; and presentation of the researcher Frederick Nucifora Jr. (JHU) at the webinar “Subtyping schizophrenia as an approach to precision medicine in psychiatry”, in 2021, and at the PROESQ Symposium in 2022.

Margolis, affiliated with the Division of Neurobiology of the Department of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the United States.The ABCD Trust partially funds the innovative research strategy of the Margolis team, exploring some of the most difficult questions posed by schizophrenia and other psychiatric diseases. As specific objectives, the laboratory’s work aims in the short term to discover mechanisms that can lead to neurological diseases and to develop treatment strategies for diseases caused by the mutation of a single gene studied by the group in the medium-term. Its long-range goal is to apply learnings from studying these relatively simpler diseases to more complicated disorders, such as schizophrenia. At the same time, the laboratory called on support from the ABCD Trust to advance its research on improving care to persons with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, as well to better understand these diseases for development of more effective interventions.

We support projects in the areas of education and health to break down barriers to learning, support mental health and promote medical advances.

Our support goes beyond the financial and is based on trust, partnership and collaboration.

Dyslexia

Access to specialized diagnosis and care, teaching practices and appropriate technologies, support for persons with dyslexia and their families and creation of public policies aimed at learning disorders.

Literacy

The functional illiteracy rate in Brazil is estimated at approximately 30%, which is not only a serious social problem, but al makes identification of dyslexia more difficult. Therefore, we support initiatives that work to improve the literacy rate in Brazil.

Mental Health

In addition to being fundamental to people's well-being and dignity, mental health strongly impacts learning. Among our goals is the democratization of access to mental health promotion actions and scientific development in this area.

Medical Advances

Research in the area of health requires high investment in human and material resources. We support institutions and researchers who are at the forefront of psychiatry, neurology and robotic surgery. We also create bridges for the exchange of knowledge, crucial to scientific advancement.

    Public policies in Brazil The ABCD Trust, through its trustees and the ABCD Institute, begins to integrate efforts to create public policies for dyslexia and learning disorders in Brazil, promoting dialogue among the legislative branch, academia and civil society.

    Coruja Educação: Foundation support The ABCD Trust invests, as a minority partner, in the creation of Coruja Educação, dedicated to the production of digital and printed pedagogical materials to support learning inside and outside the classroom.

    ABCD Institute: Launch of Todos Aprendem With funding from the ABCD Trust, the ABCD Institute launches Todos Aprendem, a continuing education project for dyslexia and other learning disorders offered to elementary education teachers throughout Brazil through partnerships with non-governmental organizations and municipal and state departments of education.
